Carnival

A merging of Caribbean and Mediterranean Celebrations

The word carnival, comes from the Latin Carne vale, signalling Lent, a farwell to meat. Stemming from the exclusive masked balls of Europe, the Caribbean version of the celebration gave way to the raucous street parties whose images we are now so familiar with. A great explanation of the History of Carnival can be found here and a great visual tribute can be found here.
